The Sum in Black Brooch is a hollow torus form defined by a hand-pierced surface, oxidised polished silver and a ring of 22ct yellow gold rivets.
Crafted in sterling silver, the surface is pierced by hand with countless small openings, creating depth, texture and movement across the form. The silver is oxidised to a glossy gunmetal grey finish, and light to moves through the pierced details. A circle of individually set 22ct yellow gold rivets runs around the highest point of the torus, bringing contrast to the darker silver.
The design is inspired by Sum by David Eagleman, a collection of stories that reimagines the afterlife in unexpected ways. One story considers a place where the repeated moments of life are gathered together and experienced anew. The many hand-pierced openings reflect that idea of countless small actions building over time, while the repeated gold rivets form a continuous rhythm around the brooch.
